Calling All Asian American and or Pacific Islanders

A new publication on Medium

I’ve started a publication on Medium called Asian American Pacific Islander Voices.

What was it like growing up in America?

My mother came from Manila, Philippines, and didn’t pressure me to learn Tagalog (although I did try).

I knew only English (she feared I would have an accent and be treated differently). Little did she know that wouldn’t matter.

From a small rural town in Southern Utah, there were the Reeves Family and myself (only child), together we made up the Asian American minority.

Often mistaken for being Mexican, I was shocked to learn that some of my classmates were ignorant to the fact that people who shared a darker pigmentation only came from South of the border.

How about now that you’re adulting (or doing your best to navigate your life in the adult world) as an Asian American and or a Pacific Islander?

I still get asked if I speak English and if I’m a mail order bride (uh…yes, of course I speak English, and no (dumb ass) I’m not a mail-order bride.)

I know there are many untold stories that still need to be told. Do you identify as an Asian American, if you do, we (well, more like I) want to hear from you!
