A running metaphor

What fuels our flames?
I’m talking about our motivations for life and living it.
What is it that we are doing in our life that makes us continue on the same path?
I’m applying this notion to what consumed my waking thoughts.
I’m a recovering ultrarunner.
I allowed it to literally run my life for a number of years. Obviously, there were other factors that made me do it, but the longer I sit and reflect, the easier it is to see why I spent so much time putting my body in motion.
There are thousands of miles of pavement, dirt roads, and mountains that we can choose to run. I see running as a metaphor for life in the literal and figurative world and our choices.
I think about all the things I have run away from and other issues where I hit a dead end. It isn’t easy to turn around and face the fact that I should have paid better attention to the road maps. Other people have traversed the same paths, yet I have taken different routes and so have others before me.
I attempted to run from my past hoping it would fade away into oblivion. It didn’t work. It didn’t matter how many miles I ran because once I stopped, all of it came to the forefront of my memory.
Reflection
What are we running to?
